“When it comes to dating, I seem to be going around in a circle. The ones I want don’t want me, and the ones who want me, I don’t want.”
-The Modern Break-Up, Daniel Chidiac
After reading the self-help book, The Modern Break-Up, I did not know how to describe my experience save Pleasant and Motivating. The book resembles other motivational books yet it does not.
Among many writers, Chidiac has the magic to cast a spell of lightness and positivity on its readers.
The Story of The Modern Break-Up:
The story revolves around the break-up of Amelia, as obvious through the title of the book. Drowned in her past, Amelia finds it very difficult to detach herself from the constant stinging memories of her ex. She tries to move on but does not succeed easily.
Her life takes a gradual but positive turn when she starts to analyze her past and embark on a journey of healing. However, on the way to her complete healing, she has found one of the best suitable matches for herself.
Would she embrace the healing or her newly found love will join her in her journey towards healing?
Book Review:
Packed with Motivation, concealed in heartbreaks, and wrapped in empathy, The Modern Break-up serves as an ointment for the readers. The most startling thing about this book is that it speaks to everyone regardless of the fact that you have never gone through any of the hurting phases of break-ups.
The Modern Break-Up entails many life lessons including but not limited to relationships, healing, the fun of experimenting, and self-love.
Like every motivational book, it focuses on self-love yet it does not forget to unblur the boundaries between self-love and narcissism.
When she goes through a breakup, the demons of isolation, loneliness, and self-doubt surrounding her feel real and relatable. I loved this particular aspect because the novel ostensibly was talking about the separation or end of a romantic relationship, yet under its layers it is talking about every kind of relationship.
If the cloak of your relationship, be it of any kind, has been ripped apart, the words inculcated in the book will talk to you as your friend and guide.
Quite Impressive! Isn’t it?
Character Building in the Modern-Up:
However, I did not like the fact that the last few chapters were messed up a little bit where he advises everyone to experience everything. To me, such experiences lead to the loss of your identity. When you are experiencing everything and you know everything about your personality, you are wasting your time. Not only time is being wasted but also you are distorting your character.
Also, I do know his chain of thoughts behind the fact that Amelia needed more time when she had healed completely. To me, it is confusing as part of the healing process is to make you more mature and wise and then move on. Therefore, when you are healing or have almost healed and found someone, it is not a wise decision to create or maintain a space.
The characters maintain a distance from one particular person while hooking up with others a lot. Paradoxical!
In my opinion, I think he should have asked the readers to try to look beyond it.
Other than that, A really fine book.
Writing style:
The writing style in the book, The Modern Break-Up is very engaging and simple. The language used in both notes and narration is comprehensible. The words reflect loss, love, and positivity.
“The more I speak to people about my situation, the more I see how common it is. We’re all confused.”
-The Modern Break-Up, Daniel Chidiac
Recommendation:
Yes, I would highly recommend it to everyone. If you have gone through any kind of separation or heartbreak, do read this book. I am certain that it will show you a path toward healing.
